Our Second Third

It’s been a month since I started as the CEO of Infosys.  An intense and rewarding journey.  And journey is a key word here: I've been on the road a lot.  And perhaps that is fitting, especially when charting a new course, because the thinking of it happens on planes, trains and automobiles heading in all kinds of directions.

Late in the evening of my very first day, I found myself in our university in Mysore, addressing ~13k of our fired up, screaming, trainees in the amphitheater of our magnificent campus.  And that campus, which I’d heard so much about over the years, was far beyond my expectations.  Its beauty, its attention to detail, its magnitude, and its sheer awesomeness, is something to behold.  Almost 350 acres, lush green, massive use of renewable energy, and just a great example of sustainability and smart city innovation.  And the university itself is an extraordinary institution.  We can train ~16k resident students concurrently with a world-class team of educators. Truly exemplifying the spirit of a company that is founded on education, on learning.  As my mom used to say, when we can learn anything, we can do anything.  And nowhere is that simple truth more evident than in our Mysore campus, where you get the palpable feeling that the young trainees, on their way to great companies in the world to do great work, can do anything, because they can learn anything.  It became clear to me that revitalizing our learning core must be a key focus for us going forward.

And last week I was in Lodz, Poland, where one of our largest BPO team works from.  Part of an enterprise that endeavors to run nothing less than the mission-critical business processes of some of the largest companies in the world.  Our team collectively processes hundreds of Billions of dollars in trade on behalf of our clients, just the procurement processes oversee more than 1% of the world's business trade!  But what amazed me the most was our team there.  Their passion, desire to improve, their creativity, was amazing, and infectious.  The way Business Process Outsourcing has come to be, what I refer to as yesterday's BPO, is not so relevant to businesses anymore.  We can do better.  We must do better.  And at Lodz one can see how automation, intelligence technologies, collaboration technologies, design-thinking, and a culture of continuous improvement both radical and incremental, will completely rethink BPO, into something far more exciting and relevant.  One that is focused on innovation, on a deep understanding of how business is done, and on amplifying our teams with technology and automation and AI techniques, so they can deliver amazing business value and solutions, not merely augmenting them in a dreary downward spiral of cost.  It was exhilarating.

And in between these two experiences, there was:
- Connect 2014 in Las Vegas, where our worldwide sales team as well as many partners were gathered.  It was great to be with this fired up team, sharing strategy and roadmap, opportunities and concerns, and to just understand and learn and connect.
- Tons of hanging out with Infoscions across the board, learning the company's culture and fabric (and the bounty of TLAs that Infoscions seem to rattle off fluently).  I've been reading about our products, analysts reports, our processes, many many examples of code and experiences, and also the 2700+ concrete ideas that were submitted by Infoscions as part of Murmuration.
- An offsite of 3 great days with our entire leadership team, in the august environs of my alma mater Stanford, thinking thru things, fighting thru issues old and new, small and big, mundane and sublime, as well as hanging out at the d.school doing a great embrace of design thinking, sitting down with startup companies and listening to many friends from the industry and the valley, talking about the road ahead for us.
- And more than 20 enlightening sessions with clients and partners.

What all of this has made clear, more than ever before, is that the world around us is being transformed in a fundamental way with software, with computing and communication technologies.  As bits reshape and pervade the atoms all around us, connecting us and the world around us, most businesses find themselves in a struggle to survive, to transform themselves and to be relevant in the times to come.  And in this struggle sits the great opportunity for us, the great opportunity of our times.  Every client I talk to, invariably has two distinct sets of priorities:
1. Renewing their existing systems and landscapes and activities.  Opening up their existing systems, to the benefits of cloud computing and other technologies, opening them up to the pervasive connectedness around us, whether of mobility, or connected systems and sensors, or analytics and complex data science techniques for business improvements and also achieving operational efficiencies in their existing operations.
2. Building completely new systems to help their businesses grow in new ways, in "being digital" as Nicholas Negroponte presaged 20 years ago.  New intelligent systems and applications, built on new platforms, in new unprecedented areas of business, where software is making its way for the very first time, and where previous generation systems simply can't be transformed or bent into.  And these systems must be built in completely new ways, with new economics, even sometimes with new business models.

This dichotomy of Renew and New, is the basis for our clients' future.  And it must be ours too.  In many ways it is a timeless dichotomy.  Alan Kay (and Arthur Koestler) called it the pink plane and the blue plane.  Our clients must transform themselves with this dual priority.  And so must we.  Our transformation must enable, and follow from, that of our clients.  And to enable all of this, we have to invest in our future, in deep employee engagement and massive two-way communication, in research and technology and learning new ways, new hows and new whats, and especially in education.  Our team and I are working thru all these matters.  I am looking forward to starting to share elements of our road ahead beginning in mid-October.  But for now it is clear that our work ahead will be driven by
- our grounding in education,
- while continually improving and optimizing our existing business areas with better processes and better automation/intelligence in all walks of our business, and
- in embracing and practicing design-thinking and innovation to help us and our clients explore their great new frontiers.
I look fwd to sharing more on our road ahead starting in mid-october.

On this labor day, as I get ready to get on another flight, I am surprised, and inspired, by the parallel between the journey of India and that of Infosys.  Infosys is 33 years old, and I’ve referred to our road ahead as a journey for the next 33 years, the next third of a century, our second third.  A couple of weeks ago India celebrated her Independence Day, her 67 years of independence.  For half of that journey, my company has been around, as a leader, a pioneer.  And as I look to its, and India’s, next 33 years, which will culminate in India’s 100 years as an independent nation, I find myself thinking about the great human potential that is yet to be fulfilled.  The great amplification that we can bring to ourselves, and to others, with our education, our learnings, our skills, our products and services, our culture.  How the transformation of our company, can be, and must be, an enabling transformation of all of our clients with great, purposeful technology.  And I find myself full of hope, expectations, anxiety, excitement, like a traveler at the beginning of a great journey, a rewarding one, full of great experiences and challenges, great fun and accomplishments, and contributions, a journey that enriches and empowers us all.

Dear Sir,

I am reproducing the email I sent to your corporate communications department. I am not disappointed with the fact that my plea for a thought piece on Infosys's Innovation strides can't see the light of the day but with the 'Indian' tradition of unanswered emails to which I thought Infosys was a sweet exception. I feel a one-line intimation, even if to convey a denial, goes a long way in establishing a culture of agile communication esp. for stakeholder-facing departments of an organization and especially when the request is free of hidden agendas or parochial motives.

---

Dear Ms Ghosh,

This regards Mr. Sikka's exemplary gesture of inviting a company-wide feedback for identifying areas of operational improvement. Given his hearteningly inclusive tone and underlined emphasis on design thinking, Infosys surely looks poised to scale new heights in software-driven innovation.

Mr. Sikka's call to his people in itself is an innovation worthy of adulation and emulation in the same breath but I wish to do a comprehensive thought piece focused on your innovation initiatives.

This thought piece would be part of IIFL Knowledge Initiatives program initiated by www.indiainfoline.com (IIFL) and not a typical journalistic piece that's often concerned with 'who said it' rather than 'what was said'. As such, we would appreciate if we get a detailed response explaining the conviction, credence and value proposition of Innovation@Infosys regardless of the hierarchy level it comes from. On cc mail is Amar Ambani, Head of Research and Knowledge Initiatives at IIFL.

Through the thought piece, I also wish to comprehend and convey to IIFL's worldwide readership, the subtle linkages between Infosys Labs, EdgeVerve and the innovation themes identified under 'Building tomorrow's enterprise'. Are EdgeVerve and BTE both manifestations of the Infosys Labs or are these separate initiatives all working parallely under the Innovation universe?

If you find the idea behind the thought piece worthwhile, I can immediately send across a questionnaire for your perusal. Do also sift through some of my recent IIFL thought leadership interviews and stories across spheres on www.coastaldelights.blogspot.com

Wishing you and Infosys every success in all your endeavours.

PS: Please find the web link http://content.indiainfoline.com/wc/ebook/nivedan.pdf a free e-book - courtesy IIFL's Knowledge Initiatives - my English translation of noted Pali scholar and humanist Acharya Dharmanand Kosambi's Marathi travel memoir 'Nivedan' - a first-hand account of his incredible voyages across different regions of India as also Nepal, Burma, Sri Lanka and America.
Kosambi was a close associate of both Gandhi and Ambedkar, a feat of sorts given the polarity between the two legends. He was also instrumental in Ambedkar’ s conversion to Buddhism. He spent his last days fasting unto death at Wardha.

If you like the e-book, do spread the good word in your circle of influence. There’s an urgent need to rescue Acharya's original and timeless thought from the vortex of prejudiced opinions and ill-nourished analyses of politically correct scholars and academicians across the globe.

Excellent narration. It carries a very good continuity and connection. This is the first time I am reading your blog and have become a fan of your writing. I have a similar dream and passion of envisaging and contributing to the second third of India, where each one of us can create a BIG difference akin to what Modi or Mohd Yunus has created single handedly. There is a greater POWER in an individual - all of us - all Indians - have to feel it, dream it and make it happen. Incidentally, I was at a conference of Philip Kotler, the Father of Modern Marketing and was proud to hear him say all good things about us, and forecast a future that could belong to India. Bravo India !

Vishal this is in response to your comments about Indian not speaking up at workplace and merely following orders.
In order to understand my response let us first understand the following points
a. I have 10 years of experience in India INC.
b. I have worked for top IT and Banking companies.
What I have learnt is that in India INC all senior managers in HR & Business domain forms a fortress which I call is Fortress of the tenured. Eligibility criteria is that you should be tenured. Motto is that nor we will work nor let you work . Message of which is that no one can do anything to us we are the one whom top management will believe. Condition of work in which is you do not harm me , I do not harm you .
So when an employee is released in environment like this the options available to him are a> Surrender yourselves, compromise with your dignity and go with the flow dreaming that one day you will be member of tenured fortress and then you will have relaxed life. B> Quit and look for a different job with a hope that things may be better there.
Yes we have lot of engagement programs, skip levels, etc for namesake value add of which is null.
In my experience what I have observed is that once I worked with a underperformer who with little guidance turned the table around, he became outstanding performer and same was evident via statistical performance management. To this my boss responded why did I rated him best, my boss’s view was he should be average and it is because we can never have a poor performer becoming best performer within a year’s time , even though it is statically proven the rating should be changed .
Another situation where I had recently joined a company , I became top performer , my manager acknowledged it that I was the best , however as I have recently joined she cannot give me top rating.
In 1 more situation where I presented to top management of how IT service could be improved by improving the constant area of failures , for which I have been working with key stakeholders however received no response seems to earn me the wrath of the functional leads, who later pumped by boss to take strict action against me as I have exposed them having no interest is fixing issues within IT and my boss very diplomatically highlighted my fault stating I should be more worried about relationships with functional lead and not what we can do to improve the IT service which would add value to the business.
There are many such situations like this I have faced as a quality person, manager and employee and found my self in chakravyuh of senior management forcing me to choose between a> to follow and become like them and b> to quit and I always went with latter hoping that next company environment will be better.
I am not saying everytime this was the case , I have seen good people also however they are helpless. They are like a Bear in jungle surrounded by Hyneas .
In my view this can change only when top management starts interacting more with middle management and starts scrutinizing the senior management layer, Top management takes up the mission of search and destroy the fortress of the tenured.

Helo sir,
I know INFOSYS is a 5 star for our country and i have been a keen follower of it and especially have great admiration for Mr Narayan Murthi.I was really glad when you became the CEO of the company as you are dynamic and wishes to promote freshers, providing them A class training, but lately i have been profusely disappointed .
I attended off campus recruitment drive in New Delhi on 6th February 2015 at Northern India Engineering College. I received login credentials on 8th February. I received the regret email last night but when I log in I am shown "in Process" as the status.I am shocked to see that people don't update portals , they are rude when we call them on the company numbers, Also my sole question is that why kept us on hold for 2 months and then send the regret letter, while some got the rejection in a week? They say that there is no requirement so they cancelled the whole process, which is acceptable but altogether strange ,as such a big IT setup it is, and it doesn't know its requirements? does the company hold random offcampus drives??I cancelled my MBA this year in a hope to get an offer letter.I don't blame anyone for that, as it was my decision to choose infosys over premiere institutes.sir, I am a very ambitious girl and i wish to become like you one day.but this whole infosys experience has been a sheer disappointment.and its just not me.There are many talented applicants moping over the same agenda.sir, don't we hold a right to work in good companies and get great experience? please see to this and please ensure a transparent process ,and please let us know that why is it that we received the rejection letter so late, while many got it in a week's time.why kept us waiting for nothing?.its just a case of acquiring talents and not letting them apply else where.I believe company should to change the way they recruit us.This procrastinated rejection might not affect the company ,but it has been a devastating boulder in our career.please listen to our plea I am sorry to have used this platform ,but i didn't have any other way to contact you.

and your blogs are great!

Thanks and regards,

Hello Sir,

I know Infosys is a 5 star for our country. With a dream to work for Infosys I attended recruitment drive on 4th Feb 2015 at NIEC,Delhi and got interviewed on 6th Feb at the same venue, but my dream vanished on March 23,2015.And not only my dreams were vanished but also of other talented applicants who are waiting along with me for the offer letters. After waiting for around 1 and a half month i got rejection mail from your side.I don't know the exact reason for this rejection but i want to say that making us to wait for such a long time was not good at all.We were expecting offer letter from you and you sent rejection mail to all at once as rejections were sent on 9th Feb in case of our drive. Some are saying about no business requirement in Infosys some are saying other things as cause of rejection.I am left with no words but what happened with us was not right.
So it is our request please have a look on this and make us clear about our rejections.
These rejections have no impact on company but have ruined us.

Lastly i would like to say sorry to for choosing this platform for this as I don't have any other option to contact you.

your blogs are very inspiring

Thanks and regards

Hi Sir,
First I would like to say that I love Infosys and Its the only company I applied due to the world class Training which you provide.
We a group of more than 1000 candidates participated in INFY drive from jan 6 all over India and waited after many got their regret mail after 2 to 3 weeks. We waited more than 2 months. After all suddenly we all got regret mail 2 days before at once. None of them left. I've never seen a company rejecting all the candidates participated in the drive. Then it doesn't make any sense of keeping the drive. Thousands of people move from their hometown to attend the drive; waiting for more than 2 months. We all had INFY in very high place. but this incident freaked everything. We know this regret doesn't mean we are not eligible for INFY. We have seen some worse people getting into INFY in bulk at the period of December. So this means INFY doesn't recruits best in class profession. Many wasted their time waiting for INFY but all of our point is WHY TO KEEP A DRIVE IF YOU ARE IN A PLAN OF REJECTING ALL THE CANDIDATES WHO PARTICIPATED IN THAT DRIVE? this wasted many peoples time. Our time and willingness to work in INFY is not a tool to workout or a game to play with Sir. Please Revise your Selection process by forecasting your needs and organize a drive if and only if there is requirement sir. Lets us be the last batch suffered from Talent Acquisition by wasting our time.
Sorry for using this platform sir.
Thank You.

First I would like to say that I love Infosys and Its
the only company I applied due to the world class
Training which you provide.
We a group of more than 1000 candidates participated in
INFY drive from jan 8 all over India and waited after
many got their regret mail after 2 to 3 weeks. We waited
more than 2 months. After all suddenly we all got regret
mail 2 days before at once. None of them left. I've never
seen a company rejecting all the candidates participated
in the drive. Then it doesn't make any sense of keeping
the drive. Thousands of people move from their hometown
to attend the drive; waiting for more than 2 months. We
all had INFY in very high place. but this incident freaked
everything. We know this regret doesn't mean we are not
eligible for INFY. We have seen some worse people getting
into INFY in bulk at the period of December. So this
means INFY doesn't recruits best in class profession.
Many wasted their time waiting for INFY but all of our
point is WHY TO KEEP A DRIVE IF YOU ARE IN A
PLAN OF REJECTING ALL THE CANDIDATES WHO
PARTICIPATED IN THAT DRIVE? this wasted many
peoples time. Our time and willingness to work in INFY
is not a tool to workout or a game to play with Sir.
Please Revise your Selection process by forecasting your
needs and organize a drive if and only if there is
requirement sir. Lets us be the last batch suffered from
Talent Acquisition by wasting our time.
Sorry for using this platform sir.
Thank You.

Dear sir
Being a fresher and a young engineer everbody love to be a part of big IT giants like Infosys. But a few days before I started hating your company because of some runt behaivour. Explaning you the whole thing my name is gunjan who has attented the referral drive of your company on 4th of February 2015 at Northern India Engineering College(Delhi). I cleared the first round and then called for the interview on 6th February 2015. My interview was very good the my interviewer was impressed . On 9th of February I got two mails that is a login credential and another one is a application status in process and some of my known got rejection mail. After this I started hoping for the positive response that I will definitely get the offer letter. After waiting for approx two months many of the aspirants got the rejection mail on 23rd of march 2015 which made us broken. This is how your company played with the emotions of ours . This is not good step taken by your company because you are ruining the career the young engineers. We also have a talk on your helpline number of your company but they said the buisness requirement is zero. I just want to say that you all awate of your company sitautuon then why are you conducting the drives. Please don't do this with the upcoming batch .
Thanks & Regards
Gunjan Roy

Sir, I have attended the Infosys Off-Campus drive on Feb 7th&8th of Feb,2015. Got selected in written and went through the Technical next day. Who ever not cleared it off got the regret mail in a week. This comes to my question but why the rest people got the regret mails after 45 days? Does it really make a sense? We got astonished all at once getting regret mails one after another,spread-ed to all the participants of the drive. Do Infosys thinks that the people around 3000 participated for the drive are worthless to work in it? This is really not fair. If we are not really selected, then why we people didn't get the rejection letter in a week? Sorry to ask here but felt no way to contact you else here. Please understand and thank you.

Hello sir,
Firstly I would like to say an IT GIANT like INFOSYS is considered as one of the prides of INDIA.We young engineers had a lot of respect for the company. But on march 23rd an unexpected thing happened.
I was interviewed at Bangalore on feb 1st through a Referral drive and received my login credentials the very next day.All of a sudden, after a long wait we all received the Rejection mails on march 23rd and our dreams were shattered. I personally feel its totally unprofessional because not only me around 1500 aspirants got rejected on the same day,and the reason being there is no more requirement of 2014 batch freshers. In that case why were the referral drives conducted??The company was not aware of its requirements before??There are people who were just relying on INFOSYS offer letter. There are people who denied other offers in the desire of joining INFOSYS.How is the company going to compensate this??Never expected this to happen with INFOSYS sir, totally dissappointed.
But lastly i would like to tell onething,,we still have a lot of respect for you,for INFOSYS as well as Mr.Narayan murthy sir.We just wanted to bring this issue to you so that it would not repeat in future.

my name is rupinder. i essentialy belongs to punjab state.i had given the infosys written test on 5th feb2015 at NIEC delhi and i cracked the apti round .later, on 12 th feb i was called for inteview round. it was not less than an honour for me to get the chance of being the part of such a prideful Company INFOSYS of india. after the interview process, i was quite confident that i would receive the very positive result because the rejected candidates from our batch got the regret mail within one of two weeks after their interview. but rest of the candidates more than 1000 were eagerly waiting for the positive response . after around 50 days of torturous waiting, instead of offer letter we all got the rejection mail.which was not less than a shock for everyone that the whole of our drive which was held at North Indian College of Engineering delhi get rejected. everone got the rejection mail.many said that INFOSYS no more requires the freshers. then why does infosys is still conducting offcampus drives sir?do we people have no right to be the part of such a wonderful organisation.kindly don't let this injustice to happen with us. sir, kindly do something we all are still in hope.and sorry for using this platform.
thank you.

Hi sir,

I am Ishita kaushik and I attended the off campus drive of infosys at Northern India college of engineering on 6th feb. I got the mail from infosys on 12th feb regarding submission of my documents and It was written that if i wouldn't submit my documents till 19th feb they won't be able to extend an offer. so i submitted my documents on that day itself and was waiting for my offer letter. Then suddenly on 23rd march i got the rejection mail and many students who were waiting , got the rejection mail. It was really shocking for me and everyone as we were expecting an offer letter.
Please sir kindly look into this matter as this is a concern for our future. And we believe that getting recruited with an esteemed organisation like infosys would prove to be a turning point in our lives.
Thank you

Dear Sir,
I am Aqeel Akhtar a 2014 pass out. I was interviewed on 12th Feb,2015 at GTBIT Delhi for Infosys. After the interview got over we were told that the results will be declared in a week or so.On 16th Feb I got the login credentials and after that no news about the results or any information about the drive came from the TALENT ACQUISITION team of INFOSYS.
To know about the ongoing situation people made various groups on Social media where people who were interviewed shared any news which they heard about the recruitment from peers, colleagues, friends. We were told that the rejections were out and those who did not get rejection has got a greater probability of being selected. But all predictions and all came to a standstill after the mail came on 23 Mar2014.
This rejection came as a blow to all the aspiring candidates who were dreaming of working in one of the best IT giants of the country and this kind of response from a company like Infosys was never expected. The long wait of around 2 months was very painful as I left many opportunities which came in between just because I wanted to join Infosys.
For big people like you it may be a trifle matter but Sir it has mattered a lot to all the thousands of candidate waiting for the positive result. Its a humble request to you to please look into the matter and do the needful.

Thank You

Hi,

I am a 2014 pass out. Recently I had an interview experience on 11th of November 2014 with Infosys. We were notified that our results will be declared within 2 weeks but it took almost 5 months and what we get is “rejection”. It is fine with us that we didn’t fulfilled your requirements and were not selected but for 5 months we had hopes of receiving the selection letter and not the rejection one. If the company didn’t have any business requirement why were the off campus drives still being conducted. We need a valid reason for our rejection.
Being a brand name I admired this company a lot but now I am disappointed as it has played with our career.
I am sorry to choose this platform to draw your attention towards the matter but we had no idea of contacting you officially.

Thanks and Regards,
Sukhjit Kaur
